In my attempts to provide a cost-effective and less chemically enhanced laundry detergent, I discovered a couple of options that I can use and not worry about harsh chemicals. These options are also quite friendly to the pocketbook, as well! That’s a definite positive!
There is some debate regarding the use of Borax. Comparatively, my school of thought is that every journey begins with the first step. This is an easy start to improving our previous habits. Let’s take this one step at a time. I’ll share even more in other posts with other variations and laundry options, including a fabulous fabric softener!

If you are choosing to make your own laundry detergent, that is a huge step toward eliminating toxic chemicals and alleviating the harsh hit on your budget. It is simple and so rewarding! This recipe is super quick.
Even better, if you run out, there is no long wait to process more or the inconvenience of a last-minute rush to get dressed and make a mad dash to the nearest store because a child forgot to tell you that one article of clothing is the only thing they have to wear tonight! It’s all there already. Mix it and use!
Please let me clarify that baking soda and washing soda are not the same. Both are natural substances but the difference is their chemical compound. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate and washing soda is sodium carbonate (or soda ash). This is what you need. Gather up the goods and let’s make detergent!

DIY Liquid Laundry Detergent
- Large plastic or stainless steel bowl
- Measuring cups
- 1 gallon-sized upcycled or dollar store airtight container
- ½ c Borax
- ½ c washing soda
- 1 c white vinegar
- ½ c dish detergent
- 3 c hot water
- Using funnel, add measured Borax, washing soda, vinegar, and dish soap into gallon container.
- Add hot water.
- Stir or shake to mix until ingredients are dissolved.
- Fill container the rest of the way with cold water.
- Gently stir or shake to mix well.
- Use 1/4 to 1/3 cup per load.
